109th Congress, 1st Session
Conscience Caucus County Social Security Data
Talking Points Memo, Joshua Micah Marshall's widely-read blog, lists congressional Republicans who might not support the Administration's Social Security proposals and designates them the Conscience Caucus. We have taken that list as of March 3, 2005 (still posted at the beginning of May 2005) and created the table below which shows information on Social Security recipients by county in each Conscience Caucus House member in 2003. The table may be sorted for the most of the columns, and the sorting is within each congressional district on the table.
The figures below should be used in conjunction with a previous Techpolitics table showing Social Security recipients by congressional district. Those using the information in detail should note several points where the two tables differ. The county table uses 2004 Census Bureau total population estimates to calculate a percentage of Social Security recipients in each county where the congressional district table uses 2000 census voting age population figures to calculate a proportion. The congressional district percentages are substantially higher both because they don't reflect population increases (for which estimates are not available by congressional district) and because they are based on voting age population rather than total population. Also, the county figures often cannot be cumulated to match congressional district figures as a good number of counties in the table are split by congressional district lines.
Bill Cooper of FairData has prepared individual Adobe maps for those Conscience Caucus member congressional districts that include parts of counties. These maps simplify focusing on the counties that make up the largest part of the district, though they do not show population concentrations within each county.
Taken together, these tables and maps give a clear indication of where current Social Security recipients live in congressional districts whose Representatives are crucial to the decision to be made by Congress on continuation of the Social Security program.
