Social Security Recipients by Zip Code, December 2003

The Social Security Administration, in response to a Techpolitics FOIA request, in July 2005 published Social Security recipient data by zip code for December 2003 on its web site and has provided Techpolitics with the data in a single file.  This information provides another level of detail beyond the data by congressional district and by county.  Because there are so many zip codes, we have worked with FairData to map those figures.  The maps do not show Texas districts as the figures do not reflect the second round of redistricting and figures for Pennsylvania and Maine districts are not precise because of redistricting not reflected in the 2003 figures.

A map showing total recipients by zip code is found here.

A map showing disability recipients by zip code is found here.

A closer view of total recipients in the Washington, D.C. area which shows differentiation among zip codes is found here.

You must zoom in on the maps to about 100 miles out to be able to see zip code lines. This is done either by clicking on the “Zoom To” button above the map and then clicking on the map or by using the mouse to create a rectangle and then releasing the right button. Internet Explorer works best for this process. You can also use the “Find” button to zoom to a specific zip code, city or state (this will change the view to the income map, so then click on the box under “Compare Maps” on the left and choose “109th SS Recipients (All Ages) or 109th SS Recipients (Disabled)).

Also, be certain to use the “Info” button above the map. When you click on that button and then click within a zip code on the map, a box with figures for the zip code and for the congressional district appears.

The Social Security Administration posting of the detailed data is found here.
